What is the Most Important Question in Life?
Who are you?
Yes, this is The Question. WHO ARE YOU? The most important question in life. You may have asked it a thousand times in different situations to different people and must have gotten the standard replies.
- I am Jane Smith
- I am a lawyer
- I am an American
- I am a Christian
I sometimes ask this question to strangers and friends on purpose, just to see how they reply it. It’s always fascinating for me when someone replies it differently, thoughtfully and deeply. People like that are rare. How many times someone has replied to you like this…
- I am a spiritual being having a human experience
- I am a human being on an amazing journey on this planet
- I am a guide
- I am a spirit in search of my higher self
- I am a seeker
What does the answer to this question basically tells you?
It tells you the name of the peg that someone binds oneself to in life. The core identity of the person in question. Sometimes it is the just the body (Jane Smith), sometimes it is the career (lawyer), sometimes the territorial connection (American) and sometimes the name of the religion, group or sect that people identify with.
But is that really who a person is or can be? Just reflect on this a little while and and think it through today. See where you align yourself. What is the label you put on your forehead? What is your true identity? Who are you?
Here is a great article on the power of asking the right questions.
